How Long Are Lacrosse sticks
There is a varying number of lacrosse stick sizes players use, depending not only on the position they find themselves in but in the manufacturer sizes as well. We will look at not only the length of different lacrosse sticks but how they function in the game, analyzing the advantages and disadvantages.
First, it would be noteworthy to clarify all the different positions there are to a lacrosse game and how the length of sticks affect gameplay. There are four different positions in a typical lacrosse field, consisting of the attackmen, the midfielders, the defensemen, and the goalie.
Whilst players from all of these positions can sticks more or less the same size, with permitted differences of only one or two inches, this variation is contrasted when a single stick is used by up to four players. Let’s have a look at the different types of lacrosse sticks used according to their lengths, starting off with the longest.
This d-pole, or long stick, is by far the longest lacrosse stick you are to find on any playing field. Its length can be as great in variation as it is separate from the average crosse, measuring anywhere from 52 inches to 72 inches.
Considering that the average lacrosse stick measures in at about 40 inches, that is a pretty far off length range, and the reason for this is, of course, for defensive purposes. Mostly used by defenders or defensive midfielders, the d-pole is carried by up to four players at the same time.
As you can imagine, this does not make for a suitable option when it comes to passing the ball about or attempting to move forward in gameplay, but it has its own defensive strategies that make it the unique and a necessary part of the professional game.
The Short Stick
The typical crosse is the short stick, measuring in at 40 to 42 inches typically. Unlike the long stick, this one is carried by all players individually and is used across the field by attackmen, midfielders, and defensemen alike.
This stick is short enough to allow players to run around and make the necessary tackles as well as being long enough to scoop the rubber ball from the ground and make the necessary passes.
The head of the short stick is what determines the success of a player and that is taken into account from the factory, where it is made with various designs aimed to improve a lacrosse player’s game.
Such features include the shape of the sidewall, the sturdy rim around the head, which has special dips for allowing ball-scooping. The stick’s quality also has to be taken into account, due to the relative amount of hitting it might have to sustain, especially in the men’s game.
A goalie’s stick can be pretty wide-ranging, but perhaps it may be better described as preferential as that range is allowed to accommodate a goalkeeper’s needs. A goalkeeper may be allowed a short stick as short as 40 inches to a long-stick as long as 72 inches.
As if that is not wide-ranging enough, the width of the stick a goalkeeper is allowed is also typically wider than that of the average player, measuring up to 12 inches in width.
Considering that the typical stick measures about half of that, it become pretty clear goalies get preferential treatment, but perhaps rightly so. After all, they are the last line of defense, and the last person everyone looks at when a team concedes a goal.
The measurements mentioned before are those you can expect to find with professional lacrosse players, but as should be expected, there are exceptions in sizes when it comes to finding lacrosse sticks for children to play with.
There are a number of options on the market with measurements shorter than that you would expect from a professional’s crosse. These are great to get your child started off on the sport or for playing around with yourself.
At the end of the day, tucking away that measuring tape, it becomes clear that a lacrosse stick can be best described as an extension of a player, aiding them when their own athletic bodies can’t. Having a wide range of lacrosse stick length then becomes an expected part of what can be a very exciting game.
